Clinical Placements

At Mermaid Speech Therapy, we are proud to support the next generation of speech pathologists through supervised university clinical placements.

To date, we have supported students from The University of Queensland, Southern Cross University, and Griffith University.

There are benefits for families and students alike.

Student clinicians who complete their practical examinations at our clinic are carefully selected in partnership with their university and work closely alongside an experienced supervising speech pathologist and clinical mentors throughout their placement.

To support the need for trainees to acquire experience with real families, we provide opportunities for families to access a limited block of lower-cost, high-quality speech therapy assessment and therapy sessions overseen by the senior clinician.

We are passionate about supporting the next generation of speech pathologists and your cooperation helps develop future clinicians.

Benefits for Families

For families, hosting placements can offer an exciting and positive experience for all involved.

Student clinicians often bring fresh ideas, enthusiasm, creativity, and take extra time for planning and reflection. Many children enjoy building connections with therapists-in-training, and build resilience and confidence working with them as part of a collaborative therapy team.

Depending on the placement structure, families may:

  • work with a student clinician under direct supervision,

  • have sessions co-led by a supervising speech pathologist and student,

  • or receive additional support opportunities as part of the placement program.

These opportunities may be offered to families interested in participating in lower-cost student-supported services.

We value open communication and informed choice.

Families will always be notified when a student clinician is involved in their care and are welcome to discuss any questions or preferences with us at any time.

Contact the director for more information.

Benefits for Students

For university students studying Speech Pathology and Allied Health Assistance, Mermaid Speech offers a supportive, psychologically safe, and relationship-focused learning environment where emerging clinicians can build confidence, practical skills, and receive a memorable educational experience.

If you are a trainee clinician seeking a warm and nurturing placement in private practice, we would love to hear from your faculty or placement co-ordinator.

Placements reflect the reality of private practice and we invite you to reach out to discuss your individual learning needs and expectations in this unique and dynamic setting.
